I spent most of my formative years with ear firmly glued to the small radio beside my bed, listening to everything from Wolfman Jack to Larry King. My face lit up from the dials green glow, I used to stare out my window at the towers red lights glistening in the distance. Perhaps it was this, and the over exposure to radiation, that planted and fertilized the seed so many years ago.

My late Uncle John had his own portable DJ business. By age 16 he had taught me all he could about the bird dance and the tossing of the garter.

It was time to blow the wedding/banquet circuit and aim for the big time!

After Grade 13 in Markham, it was off to study radio at Humber College for 3 years. I landed my first radio job January 7th 1984 while I was still in school. My first full year consisted of announcing on the weekends with copy writing and even sales during the week at a country station in Ajax. My parents were so excited when after graduating with honors; I was hired for $750. a month for a 7 day week. “You went to school for this?” they questioned.

From Ajax it was a milk run. Five months in Tillsonberg. Three months in Sarnia.

My first large market was Calgary. This is where my love for morning radio and skiing started. During that experience I would meet a lot of the people who are still an informative part of my professional life today. I followed our then morning man Jesse Dylan to Toronto to produce and be a part of the infamous ‘Jesse & Gene Show’ at Q107. After a stint at Q 107, I was asked to join them at CFTR. I went back out on my own and was apart of CFTR until they went all news.

In the fall of 1991 I started doing fill in at a station that was launching a new format in Hamilton. Classic Rock Y95 was born, as was a show that would be my life for the next 12 years.

After ten years in Hamilton the show moved south to Niagara. I turned down the headphones and started playing Celine Dion and other people you’d find on your grand parents Hi Fi. Soon it was hard to stop doing ‘head bobs’ and to add fuel to the fire, I snore.

I was re born when an old friend asked me to help them launch a new station in Ottawa. (It had a good beat and was easy to dance to). I decided to stay on after the launch and commute from here to Ottawa every week. In the summer my wife and year old daughter would meet me at the cottage. (It was closer.) However with my roots firmly planted in southern Ontario, the commute was keeping me too far away from my young family.

When returning from Ottawa I was faced with the decision of either trying to rebuild the old, or create the magic that drew me to that bedside radio as a kid. This is what has brought me back to Hamilton, back to my roots, back to CHML. A chance to pursue my passion for ‘Talk’ radio. A passion that started with fill in stints at CHML and brother station Talk 640 in Toronto many years ago. It is an honor to be a part of such a respected and celebrated radio station. I can only hope to live up to the tradition that has been Hamilton for so many years.
