For over 6 weeks America has been sitting on pins and needles waiting for the other shoe to drop.
It was then a 17 year old unarmed Afro-American youth, Trayvon Martin, was gunned down at his father’s fiancées townhouse complex in Sanford, Florida.
George Zimmerman, the neighbourhood watch organizer and licensed gun owner who pulled the trigger, claimed self defense under Florida’s ‘stand your ground’ law.
He was not arrested.
The stand your ground law says a person may use force in self defense when there is a reasonable belief of threat, without an obligation to retreat first.
It took over 6 weeks, and many protests, for Florida officials to finally charge Zimmerman for killing an unarmed person.
Some are calling Florida’s ‘stand your ground’ law a legal no mans land only adding to the confusion.
One thing is certain. It should be a court of law that decides this case, not local authorities.
That will happen now that Zimmerman has been finally charged.
Further proof the more we take the law into our own hands the cloudier the world becomes.
